The journey of Dr. Gail Weingast to becoming one of the country’s leading radiologists is as inspiring as it is unconventional. Her story begins in 1969, when she attended Tufts University’s Jackson College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. At the time, a career in medicine seemed unlikely, but a shift in focus led Dr. Gail Weingast to pursue a new path that would define her life.
By 1976, Dr. Weingast had earned her medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine. However, obtaining her MD was only the beginning of her intense educational journey. Over the next eight years, she dedicated herself to acquiring the specialized skills needed to become a radiologist. She started with an internship in pediatrics, followed by a residency in the same specialty at Colorado General Hospital in Denver. During this period, her passion for diagnostic imaging began to emerge.
Dr. Weingast eventually shifted her focus to radiology, pursuing residencies and a fellowship in ultrasound imaging. By 1984, after completing her post-graduate radiology training at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver, she had developed the expertise that would shape her successful career. Her journey took her to hospitals across Colorado and New York before she settled into her current role at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. As Chief of Ultrasound and Breast Imaging, Dr. Weingast has combined her extensive education and experience to lead her department to national prominence.
